Last January, I had just bought my very first car. It was a 1998 Buick La Sabre. Mind you, it was a 10 year old car, but it ran well and it got me where I needed to go. One morning while driving to work, I was pulled over for a broken tail light (isn’t it always something simple?). I pulled over into a gas station parking lot, and waited as the police officer sauntered over to my window.

He placed his hands on my window and immediately asked for my license, registration and proof of insurance. I was prepared for him to ask for the first two things, but the last thing threw me for a loop. Proof of insurance? I was in deep trouble. I never thought about getting insurance because I didn’t have the money and it didn’t seem like a real necessity. Well, now that I was staring the cops in the face, I knew that my decision to forgo insurance wasn’t a good idea.

I ended up with a $250 fine and 5 days to get insurance for my car. This was going to be a very crazy 5 days. Once I got home from work, I sat down at my computer and spent 3 hours searching for car insurance companies, requesting quotes, researching what were considered average car insurance rates (they didn’t seem very average to me), and trying to figure out how to fit car insurance into my budget.

This was turning into a mess. How was I supposed to get car insurance in 5 days when there were just too many companies to choose from? I didn’t think I could afford ever the most average car insurance rates, but I knew that in order to prevent further fines I had to get car insurance fast. This story is just beginning…
