Discover Card Scholarship
Discover Card Scholarship will put you through school!
Going to college is a daunting task. You have a change of location, study habits, and overwhelming financial need. College prices are constantly on the rise. Recent reports from the College Board showed the most students and their families can expect to pay about $108 to $1,398 more this year then last year. For students attending a four year college cost can exceed $37,000. That is were Discover Card comes in.
Since 1991 Discover Card has paid over $14 million dollars to over 6,000 students in scholarships. Formerly known as the Discover Card Tribute Awards Program the company awards $300,000 annually to high school juniors nationwide.
Most scholarships are chosen by who has the highest G. P. A but not this one. Applicants must only have a GPA of 2.75 and the dreams of pursuing a higher education. The selection is based on future goals, leadership, community service, and obstacles overcome. It is truly an equal opportunity for everyone.
The scholarship is awarded to ten juniors for the amount of $30,000 each. They may be used for any type of post-high school educational training. Last years winners were diverse and truly deserving of the award. Take Caitlyn Darnell for example. She lives in a small community of Avondale Colorado. When she was 11 years old she started Operation Slurry Bomber trying to obtain an upgraded facility for the pilots who fought the fires that run rampant on the Colorado Mountains.
Many adults had tried to gain these facilities for the pilots but none had succeeded. Caitlyn just was not going to give up. She asked many companies for donations for these pilots and finally won them all. Now these pilots come back from a day of fighting
Fires to a hot meal and running water.
